In 1930 the essence factory of Polak and Schwarz was build on the Provinciale weg in Zaanstad. Before world war 2 this factory was the most importent company when it comes to essence and the production of it. It's one of the most superb examples of architecture in Zaanstad that are so typical for the years between 20 and 30'ties. After the war the company moved to Hilversum. When the company was moved the building was used as a police station for some time. In the nineties the building becomes abandoned.

The abandonment makes that the condition of the building quickly went backwards. There fore plans where made to reconstruct the building for social living apartments, but in a way to keep original architectural character. In 2001 the government spends extra money for the reconstruction and meanwhile necessary restoration for the building. So the plans that have worket out could taken into action. Around 2002 the new inhabitants started to decorate their new apartments.
